Vision Academy: Developing the Next Generation of Surveying Experts

Not everyone grows up knowing what a surveyor does - but for those who discover the profession, it quickly becomes more than just a job. It’s a career that combines technical skill, critical thinking and time spent outdoors solving real-world problems.

“There was a clear gap – people didn’t know how to get into surveying, or what the pathway looked like,” says Dave Wilson, CEO of Vision Surveys. “Vision Academy was born from that – to give people structure, support and a real way forward in the industry.”

Vision Academy was created to open that door - not just by offering training, but by building real capability through mentorship, structure and on-site experience. It’s how Vision Surveys is helping shape the next generation of surveyors, one practical step at a time.

Whether you're just finishing school or exploring how to become a surveyor, Vision Academy offers a supported and practical pathway into the profession.

What Vision Academy offers

For anyone considering a career in surveying, Vision Academy provides a structured entry point. It’s designed for school leavers, career changers and early-stage surveyors looking for a clear way forward - combining technical learning with real project exposure.

Participants work across multiple surveying disciplines, including engineering, civil and construction surveying - supported by senior surveyors who bring years of experience on the ground. Our team doesn’t just teach the fundamentals; they share practical insights that only come from solving challenges on active sites.

“I can’t thank Vision Academy enough for this opportunity. Their support was instrumental in my academic progress,” says Michael Pettiford, a current participant.

Every individual in the program is paired with a registered surveyor, many of whom hold leadership roles at Vision Surveys. These mentors guide participants through goal setting, real-world applications and the skills required to succeed in the field and in their careers.

Built by surveyors, for future surveyors

For many people, the path to becoming a surveyor isn’t always clear. Vision Academy was built to change that, offering a direct and practical response to the common question: How do I become a surveyor in Queensland?

Our surveyors play a key role in that journey. They don’t just oversee work - they walk alongside other registered surveyors, sharing what it’s really like to deliver projects, liaise with engineers and clients, manage time on site and adapt to changing conditions.

It’s this kind of industry-led learning that helps participants grow in confidence, not just capability.

Scholarships and entry pathways

Each year, Vision Academy offers a limited number of cadetships and scholarships for those committed to building a career in surveying. These spots are open to individuals across all of our locations - from Brisbane and Toowoomba to regional areas - and provide full-time, paid opportunities to learn on the job while progressing toward formal qualifications.

The program is ideal for anyone who’s ready to get started, but unsure how to break into the industry. Whether you're still researching how to become a surveyor or already studying, we’ll help you find a way forward that suits your goals.

More than a program

Vision Academy is designed to grow long-term surveying professionals - not short-term placements.  Past participants have gone on to become trusted members of the Vision Surveys team, contributing to major infrastructure and development projects across Queensland. They’ve pursued registration, stepped into leadership roles and helped train the next generation coming through the Academy.

“Having that level of support early on gave me a huge head start,” Michael Pettiford shared. “You’re not just learning the tools - you’re learning how to apply them in ways that make a difference.”
