Rockhampton Ring Road Case Study

The Rockhampton Ring Road is a major upgrade to Queensland’s Bruce Highway corridor, designed to improve freight efficiency, flood resilience, road safety and travel times through Central Queensland. The project includes 17.4km of new roadway, a 435m bridge crossing over the Fitzroy River and significant upgrades across the northern and southern sections of the project footprint.

Vision Surveys was engaged by the BMD and Bielby Joint Venture as a contract surveying partner across Stage 1 of the northern package works. With construction already underway and multiple work fronts operating simultaneously, the project required reliable survey support capable of keeping pace with a large scale infrastructure delivery program.

What was done

Establishment and survey control

Vision Surveys was contracted over the two year duration of Stage 1 to provide surveying support for roads, bridges, drainage and structures throughout the construction phase. Acting as an extension of the BMD and Beilby Joint Venture team, our crew of four surveyors established survey control across the project and delivered ongoing support for machine guidance, design updates, natural surface surveys and monthly reporting across multiple active work fronts.

Bulk earthworks and UAV/LiDAR

Vision supported large scale bulk earthworks operations through UAV and LiDAR capture, end of month volume surveys and ongoing progress reporting. UAV technology played a significant role across high embankment areas reaching up to eight metres in height, allowing crews to safely and efficiently capture accurate earthwork quantities and track project progression throughout construction.

Structures and bridge works

Our crews delivered construction set out and survey support across culverts, drainage infrastructure, services and bridge structures throughout the project. This included water, communication, electrical, sewer and stormwater infrastructure, along with surveying support during the 18 month construction of the 204m bridge over Limestone Creek.

Night works

Vision also supported a major intersection upgrade completed under night shift works due to high traffic volumes. Working alongside asphalt crews and heavy machinery in live construction conditions over approximately four months of night shift operations, our surveyors provided accurate set out and level control to ensure asphalt placement met required design levels and alignment tolerances.

Outcome

The scale of the two year project required fast mobilisation, accurate data and strong coordination between surveyors, engineers and construction teams on site. Vision Surveys worked closely with BMD and Bielby to successfully supported delivery across critical stages of one of Queensland’s largest infrastructure projects. By providing accurate survey data, responsive support and experienced construction survey crews, Vision helped maintain progress across complex road and structural works.
