The Lotus Creek Wind Farm, started in 2020 and is currently under development in Central Queensland, a $1.3 billion project with a maximum capacity of 285 MW. Located 2.5 hours northwest of Rockhampton, the site will include up to 46 wind turbines, each reaching a blade tip height of 230 metres.
What we did
Vision Surveys was contracted by Vestas for the Lotus Creek Wind Farm project. We mobilised to site in 2023, delivering surveying support across the project lifecycle, starting with early data capture through to construction and ongoing works.
We started with initial ground control and LiDAR surveys for the detailed design Engineering phase, followed by ground truthing to validate the older LIDAR Survey and to move it from GDA94 datum to GDA2020 datum.
A major component of the work was delivering cadastral lease surveys across rugged, mountainous terrain - a 12 month program in its own right. Our crew operated on a full DIDO basis, living on site in camp (10/4 roster), self sufficient and embedded in the project. This meant no delays waiting on access, no reliance on external logistics and consistent progress in a remote environment.

Working across dense scrub and steep terrain, the team used ATVs and heavy duty 4wd’s to access boundaries, in some cases working with landowners to cut tracks just to reach them. Many of these boundaries hadn’t been surveyed in over 120 years, adding complexity and risk that required experienced Cadastral Surveyors utilising GNSS equipment and RTK and Static survey methods.
With no mobile coverage, our surveyors maintained communication via satellite phone, ensuring the crew stayed connected and productive despite the isolation.
Beyond cadastral, we established the survey control network and delivered setout and as constructed surveys across key infrastructure including camp facilities, access roads, bridges and high voltage transmission.
Outcome
With the project still underway, Vision Surveys has provided consistent support in a challenging remote environment, keeping critical survey works moving without disruption. Our ability to mobilise experienced crews, operate DIDO and live on site has removed logistical bottlenecks and ensured continuity across all stages of the project.
