Luke Lorback has joined Vision Surveys as General Manager for Melbourne, bringing survey experience across oil and gas, mining, civil construction and commercial construction coupled with a focus on building the business in Victoria.
He was drawn to Vision Surveys by the strength of its work and the growth the business has achieved across Queensland and the east coast. For Luke, the opportunity to establish and grow the Melbourne presence was a natural next step.
“Vision’s strong body of work and continued expansion has positioned it as a key player on the east coast,” Luke said. “This role gives me the opportunity to help build the brand in Victoria, which is an exciting challenge.”
Building the Melbourne team
Luke’s career has taken him across Australia, working in oil and gas, mining, civil construction and commercial construction. That experience has shaped how he manages projects, understanding where things can fall over and what it takes to keep work moving on site.
He has stepped into project management roles across these sectors, overseeing surveying projects and working closely with both crews and clients to keep work progressing.
Now in Melbourne, his role centres on staying close to the work. That means checking in with crews, making sure they are set up properly on site and keeping communication and updates clear with clients across current and upcoming projects.
“I stay close to the crews to make sure they’ve got what they need on site,” Luke said. “At the same time, I’m working with clients on current and upcoming projects and making sure we’re set up properly for what’s coming next.”
Planning ahead is also a key part of the role, making sure the right people and resources are in place before projects begin so delivery runs smoothly once work is underway.
A different way of approaching surveying
Luke specialises in engineering surveying and project management, with an approach shaped by working across different sectors, environments and site conditions. Surveying appealed to him early on for the variety it offers and the opportunity to work outdoors, something that has remained a constant throughout his career.
“I’ve always enjoyed not being tied to an office,” he said. “Being able to travel, work outdoors and see different parts of the country is what keeps it interesting.”
That mix of field work and planning continues to shape how he works and manages his role today, balancing what is happening on site with what needs to be delivered behind the scenes so he can be flexible to meet client needs and the needs of our team.
What’s next for Vision Surveys Melbourne
As Vision Surveys continues to grow into Victoria, Luke is focused on establishing a strong, reliable presence in Melbourne and building a team that clients can trust and depend on. That means not only delivering quality work on current projects but also building long term relationships and setting up systems that support consistent delivery as the workload grows.
“I’m looking forward to building the Vision Surveys brand in Melbourne and being part of the company’s continued growth,” Luke said.
For Luke, growth is about building a team that works well together and delivering work that stands up where it matters, on site.
Life outside of work
When away from the desk, Luke spends his time outdoors or on the water with his family. Whether it’s rock climbing, sailing, trekking or camping, he values being able to switch off and spend time in a completely different environment to site and project work.
Spending time outdoors has always been part of his routine, both through work and outside of it. It is also one of the reasons surveying has remained a career that holds his interest, offering variety, movement and the chance to work in different environments.
For those considering a career in surveying, his advice to you is “Keep an open mind, there are a lot of different pathways within the profession.”
