Mark Cleary joined Vision Surveys as Senior Cadastral Surveyor, bringing with him extensive experience shaped by both government and private practice. His decision to join the team was influenced by a trusted colleague, who knew Mark’s knowledge of cadastral surveying and surveying legislation would be a strong addition to the business. Since settling in, Mark has embraced the team culture, which he describes simply as, “a group of people who enjoy what they do and enjoy providing surveying services to clients.”
Mark’s career began through the survey practice course, which gave him the opportunity to gain registration as a surveyor. From there he worked in government across Queensland and Victoria, taking on surveying, legislation and titling roles before moving into private practice. His background in legislative reform provides him with unique insight into cadastral law, giving him the ability to explain not only how the legislation works, but why. This “behind the curtain” knowledge now underpins his work at Vision Surveys, where he is focused on strengthening the team’s expertise and mentoring the next generation.
As Senior Cadastral Surveyor at Vision Surveys, Mark’s role revolves around providing advice and guidance. Whether it is reviewing and signing survey plans or supporting others with individual projects, he takes pride in sharing his knowledge. “Advice, advice and advice, that is what my role is about,” Mark explained. “The most rewarding part is helping others grow, showing them what I know or guiding them to discover the answer themselves.”
Throughout his career, Mark has been proud to contribute to the profession in other ways, including small innovations that had a big impact. One example was replacing physical stick-on survey plan barcodes with digital images, streamlining the process and improving accessibility for the industry.
For those considering a career in surveying, Mark believes mentorship is key. “Try it, and if you enjoy it, find a surveyor who will share their knowledge. A good mentor makes all the difference.” This passion for teaching and supporting others is what makes Mark such a valuable part of the Vision Surveys team.
Practical, approachable and committed to his profession, Mark brings depth of experience to cadastral surveying while helping guide Vision Surveys into the future. And for those who ask, he is quick to clarify one last point: he is not related to Ivan Cleary.
