From baker to surveyor

Before stepping into surveying, Shannon Weeks worked as a baker. It was hands-on work, but he soon realised he wanted something that challenged him in a different way. He was drawn to the idea of mixing technical skill with practical problem solving, so in 2001 he started as a part-time Assistant Surveyor while taking up formal Surveying studies. In 2003, he had completed his surveying qualification and started work fulltime as a surveyor.

That first job sparked a long career that has taken him from the field to leadership, across project management and operations. Over the past 20 years, Shannon has worked with teams of all sizes, managed complex projects and helped businesses grow by improving how they work.

Leading operations across Australia

Today, as National Operations Manager, Shannon oversees Vision Surveys’ operations across the country. He works closely with David Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Wade Elliott, Chief Operating Officer to make sure strategies are delivered effectively and the team has what it needs to perform. His background as a surveyor gives him a clear understanding of what the job is like on the ground, while his commercial experience helps him balance performance with people.

Having spent time in the field himself, Shannon understands how every decision affects the people doing the work. “I have been where they are. That helps me make decisions that work for the business and the people behind it,” said Shannon.

Shannon’s leadership is shaped by time spent in both surveying and management. He knows how to build systems that work in practice and how to support the people who use them. Across his career, he has led large teams, rebuilt departments and guided major change programs. Seeing people grow in their roles and take on new challenges is something he values deeply. “Giving someone a chance to move forward in their career is one of the best parts of leadership,” he said.

Connecting people and performance

When it comes to surveying, Shannon believes it is a profession that suits those who enjoy variety, problem solving and independence. He encourages anyone interested in the field to start their studies early and find a role as an assistant surveyor while learning.

It helps connect the theory to the work being done every day and builds confidence faster. His other piece of advice is to stay humble and learn from those around you. “Good mentors can make all the difference” said Shannon.

Work life balance

Outside of work, Shannon is a proud dad to his seven-year-old daughter. He enjoys cooking, camping and exploring South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales. Having recently become an Australian citizen, he is proud to call the region home.

Through his steady leadership and focus on people, Shannon helps keep Vision Surveys culture strong as the company continues to grow. His experience connects the field with the boardroom, bringing together the systems, structure and support that help Vision Surveys deliver its best work.
